King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Mayor, Councillor Barry Ayres, was escorted by his three Mayor’s Cadets from the town’s Army, Sea and Air Cadet Corps when he officially opened the 811th annual King’s Lynn Fair.
A charter enabling the town to hold a fair was first granted by King John in 1204 with a later charter being granted by King Henry VIII. Known as the ‘Mart’ this is the first fair in the Showman’s Calendar.
The traditional St Valentine’s Day opening is always a formal occasion which sees dignitaries from the wider Anglia region attending and this year was no exception with ten Mayors in their ceremonial robes the local MP and numerous other persons of note within the community.
The 12 noon opening was enjoyed by hundreds of enthusiastic townspeople who listened as the Council’s Chief Executive read the ancient Mart Proclamation before the Mayor declared the Mart “well and truly open” and the fair was blessed by the Bishop of Lynn the Rt Rev Jonathan Meyrick.
Danielle Whisker, the 42F (King’s Lynn) Squadron ATC, Mayor’s Cadet said“The Mayors and everyone always have the first ride on the dodgems and then we escort our Mayor round the Mart while he tries out some of the games and rides. It was nice to be a part of the ongoing history of King’s Lynn”.
