Dereham's First Aiders

1249 (Dereham) Sqn cadets have recently achieved a first aid qualification - a great achievement for the cadets involved.

Eleven cadets from 1249 Squadron are celebrating gaining the nationally recognised Lifesaver Plus first aid award designed by St John's Ambulance. The cadets had to undertake a period of training which included both classroom based theory and practical exercises.

This was then formally assessed by a written test and a practical examination in which they performed first aid on casualties. The course is also an integral part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, which all the cadets are enrolled in and now qualifying for.

Civilian Instructor and first aid instructor, David Clayton, was impressed by their progress and commitment. He said: "The cadets worked hard to achieve the required standard of knowledge and skills. I am pleased that so many have gained this valuable skill and are now first aid qualified."

Cadets Shine at Coventry University

Cadets and staff of 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Sqn were recently requested to help Coventry University clean up the aircraft they have as training aids in the Aerospace Department, ready for a VIP opening of a new flight simulator system.

Armed with buckets and sponges the Cadets were given the task of cleaning the Harrier T4 and Scout Helicopter. This gave the Cadets an opportunity to explore each of the aircraft, guided by the staff from the Coventry University Aerospace Department who explained how various parts of the aircraft worked as the cadets cleaned the airframes.

This was a unique chance for the Cadets to get an appreciation for the aircraft's systems, many of which had access panels exposed, which would not normally be available to them. This in turn has led to the Cadets gaining both an interest in the aircraft they were working on, as well as a greater understanding of how the Harrier and Scout helicopter work.

The staff at the Aerospace Department were so impressed with the enthusiasm and hard work of the Cadets that they have been invited to attend the VIP opening day and in January to use the new full motion flight simulator, which is being installed in the cockpit of the Harrier. This will allow the Cadets to sit in the Harrier and fly the simulator as if they were flying the Harrier for real, including cockpit displays and horizon display.

Flt Lt Nathan Adams, Officer Commanding Bishop Ullathorne Squadron said: "This was a unique opportunity for the cadets to get up close to both a jet aircraft and a helicopter and get in amongst the systems on the aircraft and really learn how they work and how the airframes are put together. This is not something that is normally available to them either with operational aircraft or aircraft in museums. I am very pleased that Coventry University have given us this learning experience as well as the Squadron being able to offer something in return. I look forward to bringing the Cadets back here in January to try the flight simulator."

Peterborough Cadets raise money for Hospice

Cadets from 115 (Peterborough) Sqn recently held a bag pack at Morrisons, on Lincoln Road in Peterborough and in total raised £1,300.00.

The event on the 25th November, was to raise money for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund and in particular the Princess Marina House, a short stay recuperation home for RAF personnel, to enable extra building work to be done on the hospice, specifically the building of the new conservatory.

One of the adult volunteers at the squadron, Steve Dalton, commented on the cadets fund raising: "They were very smartly turned out, and were very helpful to all customers. They were a credit to their squadron, and their peers."

Running to Victory

864 (Watton) Sqn was well represented at the Norfolk and Suffolk Wing Cross Country Championships. The competition, raced across five categories, was held at RAF Barnham in challenging conditions at the weekend.

A good turn out of enthusiastic cadets from all over the Wing intent on doing there best made the day a great success. The intense competition was driven by all the cadets striving to run for Norfolk and Suffolk in the inter-wing championships to be held at RAF Cranwell on December the 9th.

The team captain, Cdt Flt Sgt Daniel Cooper, said: “It was a really hilly course which was excellent to run and the competition was fierce. The Watton team did really well and I am very pleased with how many have made it into the Wing team.”

Watton Cadets competed with a winning attitude, and their approach was rewarded as they came away victorious with two trophies, six cadets selected for the Wing team and Flt Sgt Cooper winning his event for the fourth year running. The girls were particularly successful winning both the junior and senior girls trophies and had four cadets selected for the Wing team.

Officer Commanding Watton Squadron, Flt Lt Michael Edney, said: “The cadets as usual have done fantastically well with some excellent results. Daniel Cooper has had another outstanding result and we wish the Wing team luck when they run at Cranwell in December.”

Nitex Title goes to 1113

The Annual Herts and Bucks Wing overnight exercise has been won this year by 1113 (Berkhamsted) Sqn.

A total of 40 teams - an all-time record - took part in the mentally and physically challenging navigation ex, with many squadrons entering a non-scoring training team in addition to their main team.

The event began at RAF Halton on Saturday evening with teams setting off between 8pm and 9.30pm. The cadets then had to navigate their route, calling at a number of checkpoints manned by staff from the Wing. The teams were marked on the basis of their final time and their ability to find all of the checkpoints, with a final end to proceedings called at 7.30am.

Despite a strong effort, the 2006 winners 1365 (Aylesbury) Squadron were unable to retain the title and on the final parade held in RAF Halton’s New Workshops, OC Herts and Bucks Wing, Wg Cdr David Henson, presented the trophy to new champions, Berkhamsted Squadron. There were also certificates for the runners-up 2370 (Denham) and third place team from 2409 (Halton) Sqn's.

Sqn Ldr Steve Atkinson, Officer in charge of the event, said: “I was extremely pleased to see more teams than ever before take part in this year’s Nitex, with every squadron in the Wing represented. My congratulations go to Berkhamsted Squadron for their success but also to all those cadets who managed to complete this very challenging course. They should all feel proud of their achievement.”

He added: “I would also like to thank RAF Halton for accommodating us and all the staff from the Wing who made the event possible.

Check In, Cheque Out!

Cadets from 134 (Bedford) Sqn decided the sky was the limit when they were set the challenge to raise £1000 in the National Air Cadet fund raising initiative set up by Headquarters Air Cadets.

It soon became apparent that the cadets were willing to maximise their fundraising efforts, so when the opportunity to assist shoppers with a days bag packing at Asda’s new flagship superstore in Milton Keynes was arranged, quickly followed by an offer from London Luton Airport to hold a 2 day collection at the airport the cadets jumped at the chance to cover both events.

A working partnership between Bedford Squadron and the Bedfordshire & Luton Community Foundation resulted in one of the partner organisations of the foundation; London Luton Airport, inviting cadets from Bedford to carry out a collection in the main terminal building. Travellers were happy to donate and with commission free currency exchange kindly offered by Travelex, all currencies were gratefully accepted.

At both Luton Airport and Asda, many donations were received from people who had experience of the armed services in one way or another; current and retired members of the RAF took time to talk to the cadets. Smartly presented young people in uniform also attracted the attention of many people who had themselves been involved in one the cadet forces during their teenage years

With the kind donations from the customers of London Luton Airport and Asda counted, we are pleased to announce that we were highly successful in our collection, and will be forwarding our collection of just over £1000 to the national Fund.

WO Oliver Browne, said of the fund raising effort: “We are pleased to be in a position to do our part for the national campaign. The cadets have worked exceptionally hard to raise a colossal amount of money in just 48 hours.”

Bedford Squadron would like to thank London Luton Airport Operation Ltd and Asda for their support of the 2007 fund raising campaign.

Thurston Raise Huge Amounts To Pack Troubles Away

On the 24th and 25th November, 863 (Thurston) Sqn took part in the National bag packing initiative at Sainsbury’s of Bury St Edmunds, to raise money for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund’s nursing home, Princess Marina House in West Sussex.

863 Squadron was set a target of raising £1,000 over the weekend to help hit the national target of £100,000. The money will then be used to refurbish the nursing home and its conservatory which is to be used for short recuperative or respite breaks to serving or ex-serving members of the RAF family, their spouses and adult dependants. The Squadron was proud to announce that a staggering sum of £2,300 was raised on the Saturday alone, with a further amount of £1,200 being raised on the Sunday. This blew the Squadron target of £1,000 away, with the total amount being raised over the weekend being £3,500!

Squadron MCO, Fg Off James Perna said: “The weekend saw 70 Squadron cadets working very hard for an extremely good cause. All cadets should be proud of themselves and it has also helped with the ‘Blue Footprint’ initiative, which is to raise the profile of our parent service, the Royal Air Force. I was continuously approached by members of the public telling me how proud they were of the youth of today. I just want to thank the public for their generosity.”

Members of the public were also treated to a Squadron band display outside of the supermarket, throughout the day, where people stood to watch and gave money generously.

Store Manager, Mr John Rastall, of Bury St Edmunds Sainsbury’s added by saying: “We are more than happy to support 863 Squadron and this very important cause. The cadets are extremely professional and are a credit to themselves and the Air Training Corps.”

Cadets get packing for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

As part of the National Air Cadet bag pack weekend, in excess of 30 staff, committee members and cadets from both 864 (Watton) and 1249 (Dereham) Sqn’s joined forces at Morrisons store in Dereham.

They spent the day packing grateful shoppers’ bags as they raised funds for both the RAF Benevolent Fund respite home Princess Marina House, and the Air Cadet Organisation multi activity centres.

Flt Lt Michael Edney, CO of Watton Squadron said: “With no suitable supermarket location in Watton, we were very pleased to be part of Dereham Squadrons bag pack in Dereham. Both squadrons worked very well together to raise the profile of the Air Training Corps and the RAF Benevolent Fund.”

Princess Marina House is used by the Royal Air Force family for respite care and is a haven of rest. However, it is in need of support and the Air Cadet Organisation has set itself the target of raising £100,000 to finish funding a building project which has been undertaken to provide more space for guests. Every ATC Squadrons have been set the target of raising £1000 by March 08 to help fund this worthwhile project.

Event organiser, Flt Lt Jason Allan, CO of 1249 Dereham Squadron said: “I would first like to thank Morrisons for their support and hospitality, and then the amazing generosity of the shoppers at Morrisons who have donated an amazing £1187.64. The cadets and adults have worked hard all day and we have even managed to recruit a couple of new cadets. We are now over half way to our target.”

Aylesbury First Aiders Spring Into Action

A recent Wendover incident proved just how valuable the St. John’s Lifesaver Plus qualification can prove - and how mature ATC cadets as young as 13 can become when someone’s life is at risk.

A group of cadets from 1365 (Aylesbury) Sqn had met up at one of the cadet’s houses in Wendover for a Friday night sleepover. As a couple of them got to the house, they heard someone shouting for help nearby. The cadets instantly followed the shouts and found two youths at a small wooden bridge on the Grand Union Canal, not far from RAF Halton in Wendover. The boys explained that they were having a field party, and had just called for an ambulance as a girl had collapsed after drinking a substantial amount of alcohol.

Cdt Stefan Alborzpour took control of the situation and told two fellow cadets to wait by the bridge to guide the paramedics to the scene on the arrival of the ambulance. He then took the remaining three cadets to assess the scene and aid if possible. The girl was found lying by a tree in a semi-conscious state, and the St. John’s qualified cadets then began to apply the steps they had been taught, and proceeded to put the girl into the recovery position after checking all her vital signs. Cdt Williams then remained by her side to assure her and keep her conscious whilst Cdt Tirthdas assisted her physically when she began to convulse. Cdt Heffer, one of the squadron’s youngest cadets, did a good job of keeping the rest of the youths out of the way and assuring them that she would be okay.

After questioning her friends, the cadets were told that the girl was a type 2 diabetic, and so Cdt Alborzpour recorded this information on paper along with her personal details such as name, address, telephone number, etc. This information was passed on to the paramedics when they arrived, and as a result they were able to decide almost immediately that she needed to go straight to hospital, and wasted no time in placing her on a stretcher and into the ambulance.

Officer commanding 1365 (Aylesbury) Sqn, Flt Lt George Fitch, paid tribute to the actions of his cadets, adding: “This incident genuinely goes to show that the St. John’s Lifesaver Plus qualification is very much a worthwhile course, and hopefully this will inspire more cadets to take part, with the Wing holding a course in early December.”

11 Years in the Doing

Flying Officer Tez Cooling of 620 (Duffield) Sqn finally receives his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, 11 years after starting the scheme.

Fg Off Tez Cooling started his Duke of Edinburgh award when he joined the Air Training Corps 11 years ago aged 14. Over the years he has achieved national rankings in sports that he has taken up through the DofE Award, learnt to program software and produced numerous websites and computer programs including software to manage air cadet squadrons (now found on the Basic CD) and online games such as Who Wants to be an Air Chief Marshal.

He completed expeditions in England, Wales and Scotland. The final expedition was done with members of the sixth form at the school where he trained to be a PE Teacher.

Flying Officer Cooling received his award from HRH Prince Edward at a ceremony at St James Place in London. Prince Edward asked Flying Officer Cooling about how he had continued his award past school age and kept at it through the ATC. Fg Off Cooling said: "The Duke of Edinburgh Award doesn't seem like that much, but when you look back at everything you've done and achieved over the years I realised quite how much of an achievement it was. I'm really glad I've finally finished it and look forward to helping more cadets reach their gold awards."

Cadets Beat The Elements

On a cold, wet and windy November Sunday, cadets from South and East Midlands Wing assembled at a bleak school playing field in Melton Mowbray to contest the coveted Cross Country Cup.

As testified by many of the old hands who have marshalled the event, it was probably the coldest, wettest competition they could remember. However, it did not dampen the spirit of the cadets who ploughed through the mud in fierce competition supported by enthusiastic and vocal staff and onlookers.

Running out clear winners of the overall event was 126 (City of Derby) Squadron, with 1211 (Swadlincote) and 1359 (Beeston) Sqn'S tying for second place.

Class winners were;

Boys                   126 (City of Derby) Sqn

From a Loop to the MOD

Cdt Cpl Robert Cygan of 8F (1st City of Coventry) Sqn never once thought that a photo took on his dad’s camera would get him into MOD Headquarters.

He certainly didn’t think he would have an award presented to him by the RAF Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy.
The fact the photo was taken whilst he was upside-down, did...

Robert was taking part in an Air Experience Flight, one of the many activities available to air cadets, when the opportunity to take an award winning photo presented itself whist his pilot took the aircraft through a loop manoeuvre.

He described his winning picture: "It's me doing a loop-the-loop on my second go at flying in a Grob Tutor. After that one I took the controls myself and did a loop-the-loop!"

Robert was entered into the Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force category of the Royal Air Force’s - Annual Photography Competition 2007 by his Squadron Media & Communications Officer – Warrant Officer Amanda Hobbins

Robert faced fierce competition in the category and the judges, all top in the field of photography, agreed that the entries to all categories of the competition were of an excellent standard.

On notification of his award win, Robert was informed that the presentation of the award would be made by the Chief of Air Staff in a ceremony at Ministry Of Defence Headquarters in Whitehall, London.

Robert’s parents and Warrant Officer Hobbins were invited to attend the ceremony which started with an early train journey from Coventry into a hectic rush hour London. Once through the tight security checks and a briefing, Robert and his guests were shown into the presentation room within the Ministry building, where they joined finalists from the other competition categories of whom a majority were serving members from photographic sections across the RAF.

All finalists entries were on display in the presentation area, their owners were joined by the competition judges - David Viggers is the Chief Photographer in charge of UK operations at Reuters News Agency; Eric Jenkins of the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP); and Andy Robinson of Nikon Pro Magazine - all awaiting the arrival of the Chief of Air Staff.

After an introduction and speech, each winner was called up onto the stage in order of category to receive their award from the Air Chief Marshal. Once Robert was called to the stage as the winner of his category, the Chief of Air Staff asked Robert about his photo and his experiences in the Air Cadets.

After the presentations had concluded the finalists had the opportunity to talk to the Chief of Staff and have photos taken to mark the very special occasion. Cpl Cygan said: "He asked how I took the picture, and said that it was a good picture!"

Warrant Officer Hobbins said: “Cpl Cygan is to be congratulated on his achievement and his subsequent award. Not every cadet has the privilege to meet the Chief of Air Staff or visit MOD Headquarters.”

Morris Trophy Victory for Halton

Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore G. Moulds recently presented 2409 (Halton) Sqn with the 2006 Morris Trophy on the steps outside Halton House Officers' mess at RAF Halton.

Sqn Ldr Jerry Davies, who was CO of 2409 during the year the squadron was judged, received the trophy which goes to the second-best squadron in the Corps

Making his presentation, the Commandant told the cadets that the competition was virtually tied and revealed that they were actually the best squadron in the Corps when they scored the Inspection. However, they just missed out on winning the Lees Trophy when the scoring for team and individual achievements was taken into consideration.

2409 Halton Sqn has been Herts and Bucks Wing's best Sqn for 9 out of the last 10 years and on the year, they were not the the best, they came 2nd.

St Albans Drillers First to Retain Title

Cadets from 220 (St Albans) Sqn recently recorded a unique victory, becoming the first ever team to retain the Air Training Corps National Drill Competition title for the second year running.

The drill team from 220 defended their champions’ status with military precision as they represented Central and East Region in the contest held at RAF Halton.

After successful results in Wing and Regional competitions for some years, 220 won the national contest for the first time in 2006, making them the best drill team out of around 1,000 squadrons nationwide.

But to retain the trophy for a second consecutive year is unprecedented in the competition’s history – and the result is even more impressive because the St Albans team also got second place in a separate trophy for the best uniform standards, and CWO Simon Challis came runner-up in the prize for best drill team commander.

Flt Lt Paul Reardon, St Albans Squadron’s commanding officer, said: That he was immensely proud of his cadets’ achievement.
When people see our drill team perform they can be forgiven for thinking the routine is an easy thing to perfect, because they make it appear so effortless. But in reality nothing could be further from the truth and the team have worked extremely hard to reach this level and stay there. Drill is an integral part of our training programme because it promotes discipline and alertness of the mind."

The Coldness of the Long Distance Runner

It was a bitterly cold start to The Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire Wing Cross Country Championships which took place at Bassingbourn Barracks on 18th November.

It didn’t get any warmer, but thankfully the rain and snow held off for this Annual event.

It was noticeable that the entrants for the Junior Girls and Senior Boys teams were lower than normal, resulting in no overall winners in the girls team, and therefore no overall girls competition winners.

The final results were as follows:-

Medals and Trophies were presented by the Officer Commanding Beds & Cambs Wing, Wg Cdr Paul Bower.

Role Play for Children In Need

73 (Huntingdon) Sqn joined in the Children in Need fund raising on Friday 16th November raising a staggering £250.00.

After raiding their pocket money and their parents, the Cadets a bid against each other to become Cadet NCO’s, Adult Staff and Officers for the evening.

Fun was had by all as the staff became cadets again, whilst those successful bidders continued the night playing the roles won and taking charge of the Squadron.

Cdt King (14) became the Officer Commanding for the evening, joined by Cpl Queen (16) as the Adjutant, Cdt Gale (15) as an Adult Sergeant and Cpl Sheehan (16) as the Squadron Warrant Officer.

Aylesbury Cadets Support Ex-Services

Friday 12th October 2007 saw the official opening of the newly built Aylesbury Ex Services Club by the Chairman of the Aylesbury Vales District Council, Councillor Netta Glover.

The club was closed for the best part of a year in order for the redevelopment of the area as part of a multi-million pound scheme. Their old complex was purchased as part of the development in order to build a large number of flats on the site.

2409 (Halton) Sqn holds its annual dinning-in-night at the venue and are well supported by the club and its committee, therefore members from the Squadron were asked to attend the celebration. They were represented by the Dave Short, the Squadron Warrant Officer and Cdt Katie Webster.

Herts and Bucks Wing were represented by Wing Staff Officer, Sqn Ldr Jerry Davies. The Wing is also looking to use the new facility for an all ranks function in the New Year.

After the official opening, WO Dave Short said: “We are extremely proud to have been invited to the official opening of the club. The facility is a wonderful design and it will be great to hold our next function in the new surrounding in December.”

New Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Rutland

Although Rutland is the smallest county in Britain, it has its own Lord Lieutenant. As 2248 (Rutland) Sqn is the only Squadron in the county they therefore always produce a Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet.

This year was the turn of Cdt Sgt Clare Sheahan, Clare has just turned 18 years and was delighted to be chosen for this prestigious award. The yearly ceremony takes place at Oakham Castle a Norman castle built in 1180.

Dr Lawrence Howard, the current Lord Lieutenant, is very supportive of the Sqn. He was also delighted to have for the first time, two female cadets as Lord Lieutenant Cadets, "adding a touch glamour to any occasion" he declared at the presentation ceremony.

Golden Thirty

Thirty cadets and staff from South & East Midlands Wing have successfully completed the Expedition stage of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Using the National Air Cadets Adventure Training Centre at Windermere as their base, five teams walked and camped for four days in the arduous Lake District terrain.

The teams were drawn from 28 cadets and two Civilian Instructors from across the Wing:

2 cadets from 5F (Northampton) Sqn
5 cadets from 378 (Mannock) Sqn
1 cadet and 1 CI from 1084 (Market Harborough) Sqn
8 cadets from 1360 (Stapleford & Sandiacre) Sqn

Smart New Home for Berko

Cadets and staff from 1113 (Berkhamsted) Sqn are celebrating after finally getting the keys to their excellent new headquarters.

The unit was forced to leave its former home, in Bank Mill Lane, four years ago and since then has been based at the town's Ashlyns School, where they have paraded in three classrooms every evening.

For some time, the squadron sought alternative accommodation within the school site and following a number of delays - including the school site being listed by the local council - the construction of a new hut finally started in January 2007. Now all the work is complete and the squadron is making use of its fine new facility.

Squadron commander Flt Lt Elaine Porter said: "After four years parading in far from ideal circumstances it's great to have our own premises once again. We all think the new HQ is fantastic and having it will allow us to develop and enhance our training programme greatly."

Hykeham Hot Shots

Cadets from 1237 (North Hykeham) Sqn have once again proved themselves to be amongst the best air rifle shooters in the Corps.

The Squadron once again entered into the three positional air rifle postal shoot and the team consisted of CWO Jack Crane, Cdt Flt Sgt Weir, Cdt Cpl's Jack Chambers and Lewis Chambers and Cdt's Garfoot and Daisy Crane, fought off stiff competition to retain their Corps second place.

Riding off the back of various shooting successes from the previous year, the team were focused and ready to make their challenge on that elusive first place. Confidence in ability was high throughout the shoots and the team had retained their top shooter, Cpl Lewis Chambers, who was lucky enough to be selected for the GB Junior Team last August. There must be a talent running in the family as this year’s team also included the addition of his identical twin brother Jack, possessing just as good an eye for the target.

The cadets were presented with their medals at the recent Awards Ceremony held at Newark Air Museum with Officer Commanding, Flt Lt Mark Wood, commenting: “Once again another great achievement for all the team. Their determination never ending I am sure they will challenge for that first place again next year, they are certainly getting closer to it. Three members of the team have also been lucky enough to represent the Junior GB Team at the International Air Rifle Championships. The cadets have certainly got their eye on the target.”

Just Plane Sailing

Following their Remembrance Sunday duties in the town, twenty cadets from 42F (King’s Lynn) Sqn were given the opportunity to tour a Royal Naval vessel which was making a short visit to the port.

HMS Brocklesby a Hunt-class minesweeper had ridden out the weather and the largest tidal surge since the 1953 floods to berth in the town’s docks for a three day break in normal duties and to participate in the King’s Lynn Remembrance Parade.

The cadets were shown over ship by Lt Duncan Abbot, the Executive Officers Assistant (XOA), who led a very informative tour. He explained that the vessel has a plastic hull as protection against deadly magnetic mines and sophisticated sonar that can scan the sea bed. They were shown the two remote controlled mini submarines that can examine suspect images detected by the sonar and place explosives near them if identified as mines. Also of great interest to the cadets was the decompression chamber which is carried in the event of a diver surfacing too quickly and getting the 'Bends'.

CWO Ashley Ironside said at the conclusion of the visit: “It was a privilege to parade through the town with some of the ships company today, some of whom are no older than our senior cadets. The visit to the ship was a great way to finish the day. On behalf of the Squadron I would like to thank Lieutenant Abbot for a very informative tour.”

Hykeham Awards

Members of 1237 (North Hykeham) Sqn recently held their Annual Presentation evening in the fantastic surroundings of Newark Air Museum. The awards were presented in front of the Varsity aircraft, which the Museum has allowed the Squadron to formally adopt and assist with its maintenance.

Once again this year the award of the trophies brought about some long fought out decisions amongst the staff as to this years winners. The Squadron thought that last year was perhaps the most hotly contested for awards, but this year topped it, proving that the high standards and achievements of the cadets really has been at its highest. All the members of the Squadron, staff and cadets alike should be duly proud of their achievements.

Amongst the guests were various civil dignitaries as well as the Trent Wing Chairman Mr Ken Smith and the cadets parents. With the Civilian Committee and Squadron staff members having carried out an outstanding job in preparing the aircraft hangar ready for the presentations, the honoured guests were seated ready to witness the presentations given by the cadets on the activities they have been part of over the past year. Wing Chairman, Ken Smith commented: “As always this was a great event organised by the Squadron. I love the idea of the cadets doing their own presentations and seeing their enthusiasm and love of what they do. A truly enjoyable experience.”

Commanding Officer Flt Lt Mark Wood said: “It has been another fantastic year of cadet achievement for the Squadron and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, with cadets carrying out some excellent presentations along with their own added touch of humour. As always my thanks go out to all involved with the Squadron and for their ongoing support, and to Newark Air Museum for allowing us to hold the event once again in their surroundings.”

£2400 Raised for Cancer Charities

1084 (Market Harborough) Sqn held a Remembrance Ball on Friday November 9th at Market Harborough Rugby Club to celebrate and commemorate the lives of two of its young members who died of cancer.

Cdt Cathy O’Neill died in 1999 aged 17 and CI Michael Standish in 2001 aged 23. Coupled with these names were those of  Peter Wilson a past chairman of the Civilian Committee who died early this year and Flt Lt Jon Minney, an ex cadet who died in a road accident in March. Also commemorated were all those who served in the armed forces and who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The event was attended by 150 parents, cadets, ex cadets and members of the Royal British Legion who danced to DDL Roadshow and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

An auction held during the evening raised over £1000 and special thanks to those companies who donated the prizes, Firenze restaurant, Moco hairstylists, The Beauty Room and Queens’s florist, all of Kibworth, Leicester City FC, Rory Underwood, Kibworth Shooting Ground, Mrs Deborah Sampson and Adam Griffin.

All the profits from the evening will be shared between Macmillan Cancer Support, Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit and the Royal British Legion.

Flt Lt Valerie Smith, Commanding Officer, said: “The evening was enjoyed by all and the party atmosphere was that little bit special given the charities we were supporting. The results exceeded our expectations and we are already planning a similar event for next November.”

Basic Training

11 adult staff and one Cadet Warrant Officer from Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing attended a Staff Development (BASIC) course at DCAE Cosford for the weekend recently.

The course which is a ‘catch all’ and covers all necessary aspects of BASIC also serves as a Pre Uniformed Course for staff wishing to go into adult uniformed service, a useful lead in for newly appointed CI's and CWO's and a good way to keep abreast of the ever changing Air Cadet Organisation for existing staff.

The course covered adult responsibilities, child welfare, current shooting and range requirements, defence writing, health and safety and a number of exercises and scenarios.

This course is also now MANDATORY for any member of staff who wishes to be considered for adult uniformed service prior to attending their boarding at Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing HQ.

The Wing Training & Personnel Officer Sqn Ldr Martin Harrison said: “Again another good course making use of the excellent facilities DCAE Cosford RAF Regiment Flight allow us to use. The students took a lot away with them but most importantly and as always it is good for people of differing experience levels to mix, swap best practice and new ideas which can only be good for the Wing, the ACO and most importantly our cadets.”

The next course is scheduled at DCAE Cosford for 14th – 16th March 2008.

Remembrance Parades from around the Region

Watton Remembers

Cadets and staff from 864 (Watton) Sqn, were kept very busy over Remembrance weekend taking part in two services of remembrance and assisting the Royal British Legion with the final sessions of the Poppy Appeal collection.

It started early Saturday morning when the Squadron brought its two week Poppy Appeal campaign to a close with the final day of collection at the local supermarket, raising an overall grand total of £943.27p. Jo Myers of the Royal British Legion said: "It has been fantastic to have the cadets involved this year and 864 Sqn have played a really important role. Without them, I think I would have found it difficult to cover the collections at Tesco and on the High Street. I hope that this year has just been the start of a great relationship ...."

Meanwhile across the other side of town at St. Mary’s Church, cadets and staff joined members of the Watton Royal Air Forces Association with a service of Remembrance at the RAF Commonwealth War Graves.

Cdt Samantha Kerr said: “It was an honour to be chosen to lay the wreath on behalf of our Squadron.”

On Armistice Day the Squadron together with Committee members and numerous parents of cadets paraded with the rest of the town at the War Memorial in Watton to remember the fallen. The parade then marched to St. Mary’s Church for the full service of Remembrance.

Flt Lt Michael Edney said: “As each year passes it is very important that we continue to remember all those that have died serving their country from the First World War to the present. I am very pleased that Watton Air Cadets have again fully supported the Royal British Legion and the Royal Air Forces Association with their important work.”

Market Harborough Remembers

On Nov 3rd 14 cadets from 1084 (Market Harborough) Sqn, helped at the Leicestershire Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the De Montfort Hall. The cadets sold poppies and distributed programmes and escorted the VIPs to their seats.

The next day 13 cadets from the squadron, helped at Leicester City FC’s Poppy Match. The cadets helped with collections for the Appeal and formed a guard of honour with local sea cadets for the players, as they ran onto the pitch. At half time the cadets escorted the many veterans who paraded round the pitch to loud applause from the crowd.

Remembrance Day saw the cadets parading in Market Harborough, where the band led the Royal British Legion parade to the Parish Church and thence to the War Memorial for the wreath laying ceremony. Meanwhile in a nearby village, Cdt Jack Hughes played Last Post for the village Remembrance Service.

After a quick lunch break the band drove over to Oakham where it led the Oakham Parade for the 16th year.

Sawston Cadets Honour War Hero’s

Cadets from 2461 (Sawston) Sqn had a very busy Remembrance weekend.

On the morning of 10th November four Cadets helped the Royal British Legion to sell poppies in Sawston High Street.

In the evening 12 cadets attended Duxford Imperial War Museum to perform an Honour Guard to meet and greet guests at a 1940’s style Dinner and Dance in aid of the Teenage Cancer Care Trust.

At 8am on Sunday 11th November saw the Squadron preparing for Sawston Remembrance Day Parade. Just before 10am the Cadets marched from the Squadron to the Bellbird Primary School for a short service before forming up with Veterans and other youth groups. They then marched to the Memorial Cross in the village. Cpl's Danny Rout (15) George Blackwell (15) and Ben Harradine (15) forming the Guard of Honour around the cross. During a short church service and wreath laying, Sawston War dead from the 1st and 2nd world wars and the Korean War were called out. The Cadets then marched back to the Bellbird Primary School.

Following the parade, Sawston Squadron made their way to the Duxford Imperial War Museum for the second Parade of the day where the Sawston Youth Group and Band joined them. The Cadets were honoured to be joined by the Royal Anglian Regiment who have just returned from Afghanistan, where after a short service and wreath laying the soldiers received service medals. The Cadets then marched down the runway with the youth group in front of the crowds before being dismissed.

Cdt Flt Sgt Michael Hooper (17) said: “I am very proud of the Cadets they are a credit to the Squadron and the Corps.” Cdt Andrew Finlay (15), the Squadron’s wreath bearer, said: “I was nervous to at the start but in the end it turned out alright.”

Nuneaton Remembers

On Sunday 11th of November, 121 (Nuneaton) Sqn joined the ranks of veterans from the Royal British Legion together with other ex-service organisations for the Nuneaton Remembrance Parade. A large contingent from 30th Signals Regiment as well as other service personnel were also on parade, many of whom had recently seen service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Parade which was led by the Air Cadet band was a stirring sight, with a forest of the Royal British Legion, ex-service Association and Cadet Standards fluttering in the autumn wind as they marched in procession from the town hall to the Nuneaton War Memorial in Riversley Park.

This year there was a pause in the Civic Parties procession along Coton Road on the way to the Riversley Park Memorial. A particularly poignant moment when the Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth Councillor Bill Shepherd in his full scarlet ceremonial robes, laid a wreath at the foot of the empty plinth where the bronze statue of a British infantryman once stood, as a memorial to the men from the town who died in the Boer War. The statue was stolen almost a year ago, two days after last years Remembrance Service.

A large crowd stood around the War Memorial in Riversley Park in silent remembrance. At the 11th hour, bugler Amiee Easterlow of the Squadron band played the Last Post as the standards were dipped in salute. An armed cadet honour guard formed by cadets from all three services and commanded by 121 Squadron's Warrant Officer, Jim Taylor, stood vigil at the War memorial during the wreath laying ceremony, which was led by the Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth and other civic leaders, service representatives and members of ex-service organisations.

Following the service the parade led by the band of 121 Squadron formed up for the march past, along Coton Road and past the saluting base at the Council House.

After the parade Ex-Royal Marine Jesse Owen who was the Parade Marshall said: “I think the Air Cadet band and the honour guard did a splendid job and I would particularly like to thank the bugler Amiee Easterlow for a job well done. I know how nervous she was about performing such an important task in front of so many people but she and the rest of the Squadron should be justly proud of themselves.”

Hitchin Remembers

Cadets and staff from 1066 (Hitchin) Sqn have had a very busy weekend assisting with the town’s poppy appeal collections and Remembrance Sunday parade.

Saturday 10 November saw a number of cadets and staff in the town centre for day to assist the Royal British Legion with their poppy appeal collections. Cadets walked around the town centre in pairs selling poppies and talking to members of the public.

On the morning of Remembrance Sunday, four cadets had an early start to travel to Sandon where they represented 1066 Squadron and the Air Crew Association at the Sandon service of remembrance. The squadron has carried out this duty for a number of years now. Sgt Samuel James (17) carried the Air Crew Association banner whilst Sgt Lewis Stockwell (17) laid the Association’s wreath. CWO Christopher Moore (18) and Cpl Michael Page (17) assisted with the collections during the service.

After a quick dash back to the squadron, it was time to form up ready for the squadron’s marching band to lead the Hitchin parade. Sgt Lewis Stockwell led the parade on the mile long march from the TA Centre to the town hall. Twenty-eight cadets from 1066 squadron were on parade. Following the service in the town hall, the band re-formed to lead the parade to the war memorial outside St Mary’s church. Cpl Mariko Kemp (15) laid the wreath on behalf of the squadron and for the third consecutive year, Cpl Michael Page had the honour of playing Last Post on his bugle. Following this short service at the memorial, the band led the parade on the mile long march back to the TA Centre.

A tiring day for all cadets, but another very pleasing performance by the band – the third year it has had the privilege of leading the town’s parade.

Sandy Remembers The Fallen

Cadets and Staff from 22 (Sandy) Sqn were on Parade for Remembrance Day on Sunday. It was a cold and blustery day as they marched to the Town’s War Memorial for a short service of Remembrance before marching to St. Swithun’s Church.

Cdt Robert Hubbard laid the ATC Wreath and Cdt Laura Jones laid a Poppy Cross on behalf of the Williamson family in Australia, in memory of Flt Sgt G H Williamson RAAF and Crew.

The Squadron then paraded for a Memorial Service organised by Edwin Bryce and conducted by Rev Barbara Eberling at Tempsford Airfield Barn, with kind permission of the Countess of Erroll. The Last Post was played by Mark Stafferton, of the Sandy Drum & Bugle Corps.

Cdt Clare Hillier read a message from the late Air Chief Marshal Sir Lewis Hodges KCB CBE DSO DFC a former Officer Commanding No 161 Squadron, who sadly died last year. Cdt Kim Coates laid a wreath on behalf of the crew of Halifax LL280, and Cdt Alice Ward laid a wreath in memory of the crew of Hudson FK790. Cdt Jason Filby laid a Poppy Cross for the Williamson family in Australia in memory of Flt Sgt G H Williamson RAAF and Crew. The Tempsford Cross was laid by Cdt Akeel Shaikh and the RAF Memorial Cross was laid by Wg Cdr Anthony Smith DFC AFC, 22 Squadron’s President. Flt Sgt Tom Jackman laid the ATC Squadron’s wreath. The Squadron’s Banner Bearer for both Parades was Cdt Cpl Dominic Chapman. A Wreath was also laid by Mr Harold Watson on behalf of 161 (1st Highland) Sqn ATC.

Wreaths and Tributes were also laid in memory of all SOE agents who were flown from Tempsford and the RAF Crews who flew them, as well as many tributes laid by relatives and friends of former personnel who served and flew out of the Airfield.

Following the Parade at Tempsford, the Staff and Cadets had a chance to talk to two former Pilots and aircrew from 161 Squadron, who flew on special operations from Tempsford during the war. One of the former Pilots had been an Air Cadet himself and joined at 16 before joining the Royal Air Force. Now well into his 80s he was so pleased to be able to attend the Ceremony and meet the Air Cadets from the next Generation.

Mr Tommy Thomas thanked the Squadron Commander for attending the Ceremony, and said: “How wonderful it was to see the Air Cadets again taking part.” Tommy, who lives in France, flew on Lysander missions out of Tempsford over occupied Europe, including the hazardous mail pick-up operations over France. He was awarded the Legion D'honeur by the French government last year.

The organiser Edwin Bryce thanked the Squadron Commander and the Cadets and said: “Tempsford wouldn’t be Tempsford without the Air Cadets.”

Officer Commanding 22 (Sandy) Sqn, Flt Lt Margaret Bell said: “It is so important for the next generation of Air Cadets and my Squadron in particular to be involved with Remembrance Sunday, and we remember not only those who had given their lives during the two World Wars but also serving personnel out in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families at this time, and that we should all never forget the price of freedom.”

42F (King’s Lynn) Sqn was represented at three different Remembrance Sunday services and parades again this year.

A contingent of seven cadets accompanied by adult staff member, Sgt Chris Lowe, were at the Gaywood Church and Gaywood Clock War Memorial.

A further group of seven cadets paraded in the rural parish of Terrington-St-Clement for the church service and wreath laying at the war memorial within the parish church. They were accompanied by staff members Flt Lt Tony Hall and Sgt Andrew Lister who played the Last Post and Reveille. This was followed by a further wreath laying at the village memorial on the recreation field.

The Squadron banner joined those of the ex service associations and serving personnel from RAF Marham and HMS Brocklesby at the war memorial in the Greyfriars Tower Memorial Gardens for the Kings Lynn act of Remembrance.

Twenty seven cadets together with their Officer Commanding, Flt Lt Pauline Petch, took part in the wreath laying ceremony before marching through the town to St Margaret’s church for the annual Service of Remembrance.

Lest We Forget

Cadets from 1451 (Haverhill) Sqn marked Remembrance Day with a series of parades throughout the day in and around the town.

On the morning, Cpl Darren Davis (16) represented the Squadron as a standard bearer with the Haverhill branch of the Royal British Legion to mark the two minute silence held up and down the country. Whilst this was taking place, cadets and staff were making their way to the RAF Wratting Common Airfield Memorial to mark Remembrance Day, alongside the Royal Air Force Association and the Bomber Command Association.

In the afternoon, Cadets and Staff marched through the town centre to lie wreathes on the memorial and crosses on War Graves, this being followed by a church service. As well as the Squadron parading, Sgt Laura Cushen (17) was selected to parade the banner on behalf of the woman’s branch of the Royal British Legion Haverhill and Cdt Kirsty Jaeger (16) carried the Union Flag at the head of the parade.

Squadron Warrant Officer Chris Wilsher said: “The Light Blue footprint was clearly visible in the town this year as the Cadets marched with pride to represent themselves, the Royal Air Force and all victims of conflict”

Stapleford Cadets Remember

Around three hundred people from the town assembled at the Walter Parker Memorial Square in Stapleford to remember the deaths of many townsfolk in two World Wars.

The band of the Boys and Girls Brigade led a Parade of Veterans, Air Cadets, Girls Brigade, Scouts Cubs Guides and Brownies through the town to the Memorial where the Mayor of Stapleford, Councillor Jackie Williams thanked those present for turning out on such a chill November morning.

The service was led by representatives of the Town’s Churches with hymns sung to the accompaniment of the Salvation Army Band. The Act of Homage was read by the Parade Commander, Flt Lt Allan Munns, Officer Commanding 1360 (Stapleford & Sandiacre) Sqn and one of the squadron’s cadets, Luke Woolhouse (15).

Following the service, the Mayor and leaders of the Town’s Combined Services Club and other civic and community leaders laid wreaths. Air Cadets of the squadron laid wreaths in Remembrance of all ex cadets who fell in wars and a wreath to the fallen Royal Air Force personnel was laid by Andy Seaton, a Royal Air Force Aircrew Sergeant and ex cadet from Stapleford & Sandiacre Squadron, who had returned home from his fifth tour in Iraq on the Saturday morning before remembrance day.

With the end of the service, the Parade reassembled and marched past the saluting base where the Mayor and civic dignitaries took the salute.

From a Town Memorial to an Airfield Service.

150 members of the public, cadets and staff from 2292 (Market Rasen) Sqn, took part in the memorial service and parade at the Remembrance Service in Market Rasen.

Whilst some of the senior cadets went on to attend a church service after the parade, the staff and remaining cadets travelled to Wickenby Airfield for a short commemorative service at the Bomber Command Memorial. Together with 20 members of the public, they remembered those who lost their lives having flown from the airfield but did not return. It didn't have to be a large parade to remember those who gave up their lives.

The cadets had their photo taken at the Bomber Command Memorial, with 2 veterans of Bomber Command, Sqn Ldr Rex Wheeldon AFC RAF Ret'd who flew in world war 2 and Sqn Ldr Rob Glover RAF Ret'd who flew from Wickenby during the Cold War until 1971 when the airfield closed.

It was a cold morning but the cadets' turn out at both parades were complemented on by members of the public.

Polish Ex-Combatants Remember

On Sunday 4th November, cadets from 121 (Nuneaton) Sqn attended the Polish Ex-Combatants Association Remembrance Service at the Baginton Cemetery near Coventry Airport.

The Service was being held to remember the Polish Airman who lost their lives whilst serving with the RAF in the area during the Second World War.

The link between the Squadron and Polish Airman serving with the RAF goes back to the days of 1942 when cadets from Nuneaton had regular visits to Polish Wellington bomber Squadrons based at RAF Bramcote and later RAF Nuneaton.

Sgt Brian Ferris a piper from the band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and the Air Cadet band led the parade of Polish and other ex-service association standards and personnel to the Baginton Cemetery for the act of Remembrance which was conducted by Rev. Dr Romuald Szczodrowsdki. During the service Amiee Easterlow of the cadet band played the Last Post and Reveille and cadets stood vigil at the graves of Polish Airman.

After the event the parade marshal, Mr J.Ramsey said: “We are all so delighted with the contribution made by the members of the Air Cadet band during the service. It’s so good that so many young people are willing to give up their time to help us to commemorate the sacrifice of so many fallen Polish Airmen who served with the RAF during the War."

MK Lifesavers

Milton Keynes is a safer place this week, after nine Cadets from the town gained special life-saver qualifications.

The group of nine youngsters from 2532 (Milton Keynes) Sqn have been awarded LifeSaverPlus awards following 14 hours first aid training and a tough assessment of their life-saving skills.

Among the key topics in the training and assessment were resuscitation, controlling bleeding and managing fractures, but the cadets also had to demonstrate knowledge of various other medical problems.

The cadets, who are now entitled to wear special badges on their uniform, collected the awards from their commanding officer, Flt Lt David Smith, in a ceremony which was also attended by their parents.

Flt Lt Smith said: “Air Cadets are able to acquire all sorts of skills and qualifications through their day-to-day training with the Air Training Corps, but these LifeSaverPlus awards are an example of how the training we provide can be of benefit to the whole community, not just the cadets as individuals.

The cadets worked very hard to achieve these awards and I know that they have inspired many of the other members of the squadron to give it a go themselves.”

Halton take the Title

Herts and Bucks Wing’s annual cross-country competition took place on Sunday, with 2409 (Halton) Squadron taking the overall title. Runners up were 2370 (Denham), with 332 (High Wycombe) coming a close third.

The highlight of the winter sporting calendar, the event was held at RAF Halton, where 2409 Sqn is based. With most units from the Wing sending cadets to compete, the attendance was good and the mild and dry weather made for a more enjoyable morning than in some previous years!

For the first time, the event also featured a staff race with Plt Off Laura Pole RAF VR(T) of 248 (Letchworth Garden City) Sqn taking the ladies title and Sqn Ldr Ross Gilbert RAF of 332 (High Wycombe) Sqn winning in the men’s category. Both took home a bottle of champagne donated by event organiser Sqn Ldr Paul Mimpress RAF VR(T)

Sqn Ldr Mimpress offered his thanks to the staff who helped run the event and to RAF Halton for accommodating the competition. He added: “As usual it was a fun and enjoyable day at which great sportsmanship was exhibited by all. The staff race added an interesting new dimension and I’m sure we’ll be looking to repeat that in future years.”

The results in the individual categories were:

Local Businesses assist Sawston Cadets

On the 3rd November Cadets from 2461 (Sawston) Sqn helped out at their villages firework display.

The Cadets had a very busy Saturday which began with staff, civilian committee members and 2 Cadets, Cpl George Blackwell (15) and Cdt Daniel Pugh (13) meeting at the Squadron HQ to chop 20 Kgs of Onions which were kindly donated by Mary’s Greengrocers in the village.

In the afternoon six Cadets, Cpl's Ben Morgan (17) Ben Harradine (15) Taylor Allison (16) and Cdt's Matthew Parker (13) Tom Harradine (13) Ben Marshall (13), spent the afternoon helping to set up the Squadron’s field kitchen on Huckeridge Hill in Sawston ready for the Hot Dogs that the Squadron would be selling that night in aid of Squadron funds.

In the evening an impressive 26 cadets assisted Sawston Parish Council with marshalling, judging Guy Fawkes and the Pumpkin and Colouring Competitions. Meanwhile Staff and Civilian Committee members were serving Hot Dogs to the public.

The Squadron would like to take this opportunity to thank North’s Bakery for donating 100 rolls and Sinan and Nurettin Denit owners of the Balaban Kebab in Sawston who donated 500 rolls, Sinan said: “We are very happy to help the cadets to raise funds for their Squadron”.

Karla Parker the Squadrons Treasurer said: “On behalf of the Civilian Committee we were over whelmed by the generosity of the local businesses who supported our fund raising efforts. It was fantastic to see a community working together.”

Good shot!

Cadets from Herts and Bucks Wing who took part in this year’s Cadet Inter Service Skill at Arms Meeting (CISSAM) at Pirbright, came away with a respectable result.

The team, comprising Cdt Cpl's Hugh Sparrow and Jack Dewitt as well as Cdt's George Culverhouse and Phil Elliott from 220 (St Albans) Sqn, and Cdt Lawson from 2313 (Beaconsfield) DF, attended the prestigious marksmanship contest for the first time.

Overseen by 220 Sqn Commanding Officer, Flt Lt Paul Reardon, the cadets competed in a variety of competitions over the four days including:

* individual pool bull at 300yds;
* team clay pigeon shooting;
* the Marling (a 100yd run down to engage a target at 100yds);
* the Monty of Alamein (a 9-round deliberate followed by 5-rounds rapid and 5-rounds snap all at 200yds);
* individual and team snap at 300yds.

The final day saw the inter-service final with two teams from each of the ATC, Army Cadets and Sea Cadets taking part.

The 220Sqn / 2313DF team finished fifth out of the 11 ATC teams and 26th overall. Overall, the ATC came last out of the three services – particularly unfortunate as Commandant Air Cadets was in attendance to take the final parade and make the presentations.

But Flt Lt Reardon said the Herts and Bucks Wing result was respectable given that none of the cadets had attended the competition before or even experienced many of the types of shooting that they took part in over the four days.

The cadets enjoyed the event and it was interesting to take part in different types of skill at arms shooting,” he said.“I believe we should endeavour to get more teams there next year and I think the experience from this year will stand us in good stead and help us do better in the future.”

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2007

Sandy Appeal

On Saturday 2nd November, cadets from 22 (Sandy) Sqn collected in Sandy town centre for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The good turn out from the cadets meant that three groups could be found in the town during the four hours that they were there. They all reported that people were very generous for this worthwhile charity and it also gave the Cadets an opportunity to meet the people of Sandy.

Fg Off  John Tunesi, who accompanied the Cadets said afterwards: “It is heartening to see our Cadets turning out for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and I am pleased that we managed to raise such a lot for its worthwhile work. Our Cadets are a credit to us and the Air Training Corps.”

Those who attended were: Sgt Alexander Turtle, Cpl's Jade Mullens and Akeel Shaikh and Cdt's Joshua Bruce, Jason Filby, Clare Hillier, James Thomas and Alice Ward, supported by Squadron staff members, Flt Lt Geoff Matthews, Fg Off  John Tunesi and CI Jane Tunesi.

A Poppy Appeal with a Difference

864 (Watton) Sqn are assisting the Watton Branch of the Royal British Legion with a poppy appeal with a difference. In a first for East Anglia, residents of Watton and the surrounding area are being encouraged to buy two poppies this year, one for themselves and one for the Wayland Community wreath.

Thousands of poppies are needed to fill the community wreath which will then be laid at the Remembrance Service at the War memorial in Watton in two weeks time.

Watton Poppy appeal manager Jo Myers said: “Watton Air Cadets have got off to an excellent start with £205 raised in their first session. This should lead to a really good total as they have lots of sessions planned!”

Air cadets from Watton will be very visible over the next two weeks assisting with street, static and supermarket collections, leading up to the Act of Remembrance.

OC of Watton Squadron, Flt Lt Michael Edney said: “Over the last year the number of Legion beneficiaries aged 35 or under has increased by 30%. It goes to show that there is a growing need for youth to be involved in their work and we are very pleased to fully support this years poppy appeal.”

Cadets Poppy ‘Red’y to go

Cadets at 8F (1st City of Coventry) Sqn based in Wyken, are answering the call for poppy sellers in the city.

Over 30 youngsters and volunteer staff are poised to assist our affiliated No. 1 Coventry Branch Royal British Legion to raise the vital funds required to support veterans of all our armed forces.

The cadets will be at Tesco’s Walsgrave and Arena branches, B&Q at Binley and ASDA at Whitley during Saturday’s 3rd and 10th November.

The cadets recognise the importance of supporting such a cause and in addition will be taking part in the annual Remembrance Parade in the city joining fellow cadets from the other four Squadrons in the city and respective armed service cadet forces.

Fg Off Amanda Sinfield, Officer in Charge of the squadron said: "I am really encouraged by the number of our cadets who have volunteered to give up their valuable Saturdays to sell poppies. They understand the importance of the work of the Royal British Legion and this is reflected by their commitment to the Poppy Appeal. I am, as always, very proud to be associated with these young people."

Poppy Appeal Off to a Flying Start

On Saturday 27th October the band of 121 (Nuneaton) Sqn joined representatives of the Royal British Legion and other ex-service organisations in the Nuneaton Market Place for a ceremony to mark the launch of the 2007 Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The Officer Commanding 30 Signal Regiment, the Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth, the RBL branch president and many other civic heads and army representatives were in attendance.

The Band of 121(Nuneaton) Squadron which was joined by Sgt Brian Ferris, a piper from the band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, led the procession from the Town Hall steps into the crowded Market Place for the Poppy Appeal launch ceremony.

This dignified and emotive ceremony brought the Nuneaton town centre to a virtual standstill as people gathered to remember those who have died in conflict. During the ceremony the standard bearers from the Royal British Legion, other ex-service organisations and cadets dipped their standards, in salute, as the bugler played the Last Post and Reveille.

Following the ceremony cadets from 121 Squadron joined other Poppy Appeal collectors as the general public began making donations.

Shoppers and passers by were entertained by the 121 Squadron band and the piper Sgt Ferris. The band played a variety of wartime favourites and other popular tunes. The band's drummers relished the opportunity to accompany a piper. It was a completely new experience for them and one they want to repeat.

Don Jacques, the Nuneaton & Stockingford Poppy Appeal organiser said that the cadets had helped to get the 2007 Poppy Appeal off to a flying start and that the first day of the collection was going very well.

Flt Lt Paul Hincks of 121 Squadron said: “Everyone who took part should be congratulated on their performance and that the cadets welcomed the opportunity to help the RBL with the Poppy Appeal. It is important that the younger generation understand the real meaning of the poppy collection and why Remembrance Day is so significant. Having the band perform in the town centre enabled our cadets to help the RBL to heighten the public awareness of the collection as well as being good publicity for the Squadron. The Poppy Appeal is a good way for the Squadron to help the Royal British Legion, to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who have served in the Armed Forces.”

Kings Lynn's Poppy Appeal Launched

Cadets from all three services paraded with veterans when Borough Mayor, Councillor Cathy Mellish, launched the King’s Lynn British Legion 2007 Poppy Appeal.

Parade Commander for the event was 42F (King’s Lynn) Sqn’s Sgt Chris Lowe. Under his guidance the Legion Standards, veterans and cadet units successfully negotiated the route from the British Legion club to the town’s pedestrian shopping centre thronged with Saturday shoppers.

A short address from the Mayor focused on the fact that the poppy appeal is as important today, with our service men and women currently in Iraq and Afghanistan, as it ever was. This was followed at 11 o’clock by a brief act of remembrance and minutes silence.

At the conclusion of the proceedings, the parade returned to the British Legion club where the cadets were thanked for their support and invited to enjoy a prepared buffet.
