Promotion at Park Farm
Last
weekend, cadets from 51 (Orton) Sqn took part in promoting and advertising
the squadron by attending the Park Farm Open Weekend. The cadets put on
demonstrations of Drill and encouraged the general public to take part,
including 'the farm animals'.
The event was held at Park Farm in Thorney, to celebrate local agriculture
and Vintage machinery. The event was privileged to have a flypast by The
Red Arrows, be it only as they made their way to another event.
The
squadron's Drum Corp, demonstrated their skills on the drums, each time
making those attending the event gather round in amazement. The squadron
also managed to raise money by selling custom made bags and pens.
The weekend was not all about promoting though as the cadets had a
wonderful time and took part in several activities from sausage making, to
feeding the lambs and even a tractor ride through the estate. We would
like to thank Park Farm for their invitation and their hospitality
throughout the whole weekend, it was great fun.
There is even a video on our Facebook account, why not take a look '51 –

2028 Recruit at Southam Carnival
On Bank Holiday Monday the 27th May staff and cadets from 2028 (Southam)
Sqn took the opportunity to maintain their annual involvement in Southam
Town Carnival.
Unfortunately
this year is was more of a challenge as the Wing marquee was not available
but with the help of a relative of one of the cadets a ‘recruiting tent’
was set up! The day was very well attended by the people of Southam and
its surrounding villages as always. The weather was dry and sunny for the
most part and became very warm in the afternoon. The Carnival is organised
every year by the local Branch of the Lions which has been very supportive
of the Squadron over a number of years.
The staff and cadets set up and prepared the 'Recruiting Tent‘ on the
recreation ground, together with many representatives of other local
organisations from Southam. The recreation ground is only a few hundred
meters from the Squadron HQ so comfort breaks and down time was easy to
organise.
The cadets took it in turns to work on the Recruiting ‘stand’ and walk
around the site with hand outs and other literature about the ATC. Many of
the cadets had spent the last two parade nights preparing the photographs
and other ‘items’ ready to display at the Carnival, all intended to show
the many activities that Air Cadets get the opportunity to become involved
in.
During
the afternoon, the crowds became quite large with the avenue of stands
thronged with people out to have a good time. There was the usual funfair
and various activities going on throughout the day with everyone in shirt
sleeves and enjoying themselves.
The day was yet another opportunity to remind the people of Southam, young
and old, that their local Air Cadet Squadron was alive and well and
looking for new recruits. In fact once again, it was great to tell them
that 2028 Squadron not only continues to flourish but is maintaining its
numbers and always looking for more Cadets.
Flt Lt Daryll Moreton commented: "It was a really good day today with
people entering into the spirit of the Carnival. This year was more of a
challenge than usual as we had to improvise a recruiting tent but as
always my cadets came up with a solution. They were naturally eager to
show off what the Air Cadets can offer young people and took the
opportunity to invite the youngsters of the Town to come along and see us
and see more of what the ATC has to offer."

New Squadron Blood
A
new year means only one thing at 1360 (Stapleford and Sandiacre) Sqn,
recruitment time, when six members of squadron staff attended a local
secondary school in the area, aiming to bring in new talent to the Air
Cadet Organisation.
The morning started off early arriving for registration, which was a
chance to reminisce for many of the staff members. A quick safety brief
from the school led on to setting up two presentations. The commanding
officer, Flt Lt Gareth Fowler gave his introductory presentation, showing
off what the Air Training Corps has to offer.
In another room, DofE
presentation and team building exercises were laid on, to show yet more
benefits of the organisation.
The morning proved successful for the squadron, who gained 18 new recruits
on introduction night.

Corby's On The Road
422 (Corby) Sqn have begun their 2013 recruitment drive and started the
event at the Kingswood School in Corby, who were delighted to accept an
invitation from the squadron to bring their recruitment stand to the
School’s Year 9 Parents’ Evening.
On
arrival the squadron was met by Geography Teacher and Assistant Head
teacher Jon Lawson, who directed them to the centre of the school’s atrium
where the Parent’s Evening was being held. After a quick tour of the
school, the squadron quickly set up their recruitment stand and prepared
themselves for the arrival of the parents and students.
The Recruitment Team for the evening included Plt Off Ritchie, FS (ATC)
Broxton, Cdt FS Loy, Cdt Sgts Cresswell, Samuels-Hammond and Broxton and
Cdt Glover. Cdt Glover is currently in Year 9 at the school, so it was a
great opportunity for him to show his fellow classmates what he gets up to
outside of school and he certainly proved a real asset.
The team, who attended in greens, wedgewood blues and even a flying suit,
promoted the squadron and the Air Cadets with great enthusiasm, gaining
great interest from the parents, students and even the teachers (one of
which is gliding instructor in her spare time).
Special thanks must go to The Kingswood School, Mr Hudson, Head teacher
and Mr Lawson for allowing the Squadron this opportunity.

Brilliant Success
Wednesday night saw 51 (Orton) Sqn open their doors to potential new
recruits, for both cadets and staff alike. It was a successful evening
with existing cadets and staff, mixing with the general public to show and
demonstrate what the ATC can offer the local community.
There
was stations setup showing some of the activities available through the
Corps from training, to shooting and evening flying…. WO (ATC) Gary Wilcox
took over classroom two, with two of our most recent cadets, and three of
our newly qualified First Class Training Cadets (FCTC), to give examples
of the training involved in the initial weeks through the FCTC training
program.
Cdt FS Darren Smith, with the
assistance of Cdt Cpl Conor Wells, used the squadron’s flight simulator,
which many of the visitors took hold of the controls, and took their first
sample of flying, all of whom after their initial training will have the
opportunity to fly the light aircraft through the ATC at Cranwell.
Along with the shooting and general conversation, the evening completed
with the enrolment of at least 6 new cadets, of which Flt Lt Andy Mason
said: “If we only have 6 new recruits this will be a fantastic success,
but with the word of mouth this could easily double.”

Recruiting
At ASDA
209 (West Bridgford) Sqn held a recruitment and fund raising event at a
local Asda store. Their stand raised a significant amount of interest both
from young people and former cadets who had been with the Squadron 50
years ago!
By the end of the day the static fund raisers had also collected £215
which will go towards subsidising squadron activities.

Recruiting
Team Hit Southam College
On Tuesday the 5th February by kind permission of the Head Master, Cdt FS
Hazel Mann from 2028 (Southam) Sqn gave a talk to year 12 students at
Southam College. FS Mann had prepared a power point presentation as a back
drop to her ‘recruiting’ talk on behalf of the ATC in Southam.
It is fair to say that the College is the main recruiting base for 2028
Squadron and the Head Master, Mr Samra, has always been a great supporter
of what the ATC represents and the benefits to the School from his
students being Cadets. The presentation will now be published on the
School web site and Face Book page.
Flt Lt Daryll Moreton, CO of 2028 Squadron remarked: "I was delighted
when FS Mann said she was going to give a presentation on the Air Training
Corps at Southam College, she is continuing a long line of Cadets who have
given presentations to potential ‘recruits’ and I hope her efforts prove
fruitful."

Tombola & Recruiting Stall In Nuneaton Town
Centre
The weather on Saturday 15th December was kind to the Civilian Committee
of 121 (Nuneaton) Sqn as they encouraged the good people of Nuneaton to
part with their hard earned coppers to support the activities of the
squadron.
The
squadron's Tombola. located on the Nuneaton Town Centre Market Place
Charity Stall, helped to exchange all of the donated bric-a-brac and
unwanted items into cash.
Cdt Fs Connor Little and Flt Lt Paul Hincks also joined the Civilian
Committee on the stall and spent the day talking to potential recruits.
The Squadrons Civilian Committee Chairman, Mr Len Hardy, said: “Thanks
to the kind support of the people of Nuneaton, we have managed to turn all
the items that had been generously donated to the squadron into a
creditable £230.90. I would take the opportunity to thank my fellow
committee members for braving the cold and running the Tombola and I would
also like to thank Connor and the CO for joining us to run the recruiting
side of things.”

Active in the
Local Community
504 (West Nottingham) Sqn recently took part in an Autumn Fair, actively
seeking to raise the profile of the Unit and the Wider Air Cadet
Organisation amongst potential new recruits in the local community. The
Autumn Fair was organised by the Squadron Padre, Rev Mandy Cartwright, who
was keen that 504 Squadron be present at the event.
Using the Wing marquee, as well as promotional material and having cadets
and staff on hand to advise anyone interested in joining, 504 Squadron
attracted significant interest and was able to project the opportunities
available in the ATC to a wide and varied audience.
Squadron Commander, Flt Lt Jodi Hudson, said: “I am pleased that 504
Squadron was a part of this event, as I know we have increased our
presence and profile in the local community significantly as a result of
it. We have already seen several new recruits join the Unit, following
their interest in seeing us at the Autumn Fair. We are very grateful to
our Squadron Padre for inviting us to be a part of this event.”

Cadets Recruit at Military Weekend
Cadets from 115 (Peterborough) Sqn were in their element at Peterborough
Museum over the weekend of 24th and 25th November, when they took part in
the Military Weekend.
The
weekend was organised by Vivacity, Peterborough Culture and Leisure and
was held at the City Museum, bringing over 2000 years of military history
alive for the City of Peterborough.
The event featured displays from the Stoke Military Society, which
consisted of uniforms, military models and weapons from both World Wars
and great wars before this. There were also military re-enactors from
Roman, Viking and the Middle Ages all getting into character and bringing
history alive for visitors.
The cadets were asked to attend the event, as it was not all about the
history, but the future generations and this gave the Squadron the
opportunity to promote the Air Cadet Organisation and their activities and
recruit new members into the organisation.
FS (ATC) Jason Kelly was assisting the Cadets throughout the weekend. He
said: "As a Military Youth Organisation of the Royal Air Force, this
was an excellent chance for us to talk to youngsters of the City to see if
they would like to get involved and join. For the cadets who supported,
they were on hand to talk to potential new recruits and share their
experiences with them. All of the cadets have had a great time this
weekend, they were able to get involved with the displays and re-enactors,
so they were learning about military history whilst promoting the Air
Cadets."

Thurston Welcomes New Recruits
863 (Thurston) Sqn have welcomed six new cadets into their ranks following
a Recruit Training Camp held last weekend.
The
six recruits, William Goodey, Morgan Smith, Luke Prosser, Connor McMillan,
Jake Hayes and Harry MacDonald, took part in the training course designed
to teach them the basic skills required to become Air Cadets.
These skills included uniform preparation, drill, map reading, and an
introduction to field craft. They also completed initiative exercises,
designed to help them build teamwork and leadership skills. They will now
commence onto the Junior Cadet training syllabus, following which they
will be able to go flying.
The training camp was concluded on Sunday with a final parade and
presentations by Fg Off Adam Martin, Officer in Charge , who said; “The
biannual Recruit Training Camp was a great success thanks to the hard work
and efforts of the staff, NCO’s and senior cadets. The recruits started
the weekend with limited knowledge and skills of how to be a cadet but
finished the weekend fully trained and ready to join the rest of the
squadron. They all put in 100% effort throughout the weekend which was
great to see.”

New Recruits to Tackle Basic Training
30 new recruits have started their 14 week basic training at 115
(Peterborough) Sqn. After an exceptionally successful recruitment drive
and Open Evening held on Monday 24th September 2012, the new recruits have
signed on the dotted line to join the Air Cadets.
All
of the new recruits will undergo an intensive training course, which will
include drill, dress, and discipline. Whilst they are learning to polish
their shoes and press their uniform, they will also learn about the RAF
and the history of the ATC.
FS (ATC) Kev Foxcroft said: "The number of new cadet recruits is
impressive, they will now learn new skills and disciplines that will not
only help them whilst they are in cadets but also at school and later in
life."
The number of junior cadets has bolstered the strength of the squadron to
just below 100, this makes 115 Squadron one of the largest squadron within
the Beds & Cambs Wing – a mighty force to contend with and Flt Lt Stephen
Dalton, Officer Commanding, is looking forward to the future with all of
the cadets putting their best foot forward and representing both the
squadron and the ATC.

West Bridgford at Bridgfest
Cadets
and staff from 209 (West Bridgford) Sqn ran a recruitment stall at this
years Bridgfest festival. Run by Rushcliffe Borough Council, the festival
is now in its fourth year and is aimed at 10 to 19 year olds.
It also includes activities for all the family, such as bouncy castles,
food stalls, climbing walls and of course a music stage. Twelve local
bands played continuously throughout the day.
The stall included videos about Air Cadet and RAF activities, adventure
training and survival equipment and a Viking glider cockpit. As well as
demonstrating the equipment the cadets also offered face painting with
camo cream, letting interested youngsters to get their ‘war face’ on.

A Sunny Day at Beaufort Park Fete
Cadets
and staff from 864 (Watton) Sqn recently spent the day at the Blenheim
Residents Association fete at Beaufort Park in Carbrooke. The cadets took
their PR stand with a view to recruiting young people aged between 13-20
to join the squadron.
The cadets had on display equipment that is used on D of E expeditions,
such as tents, back packs, 24hr ration packs and set up a bivouac as used
when doing field craft exercises, as well as some of their band
instruments. Cadets of all ages were on hand to talk to anyone who was
interested about all the great opportunities that are available to young
people who join the air cadets.
Cdt Macloughlin said: “It’s a really good chance to get out in the
local area and recruit, Beaufort Park is right next door to our squadron
building and there are lots of young people here who might be interested
in joining cadets, and the weather was really sunny and hot so it was a
nice day to be outside.”

Gunning For New Recruits
Cadets from 121 (Nuneaton) Sqn did their bit to keep a fine Naval
tradition alive as they 'Ran the Gun' at the Nuneaton Carnival Gala Day.
The
'Cadet Gun Run', has become an annual event at the 30 Signals regiment
open day at Gamecock Barracks near Nuneaton, however, due to the regiments
commitments to the Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics the regiment will
not be having an open day this year. Thankfully for the first time in many
years the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wings Field Day didn’t clash with the
Nuneaton Carnival so the squadron was able to keep their Naval Gun Run
tradition alive by performing at this years Nuneaton Carnival Gala.
The Air Cadet display team provided a demonstration of teamwork and
discipline in the main arena as they conducted a Field Gun run using their
scaled replica of the equipment traditionally used by the Royal Navy at
the Royal Tournament since 1912. Gala Day spectators were held spellbound
as the gun team of 10 cadets disassembled, reassembled and manhandled
their replica gun and limber around a gruelling course.
The annual cadet Field Gun display has been made possible by the Rotary
Club of Arbury who presented the Ivan Davys Field Guns to the Sea and Air
Cadet units in recognition of the close working relationship between the
Rotary Club and the two cadet organisations.
Having
'Run the Gun' there was no time to spare for the members of the Gun Team
as they hurriedly changed out of their Gun Run rig back into RAF blue for
their next task of finding budding new recruits and networking with the
public.
Flt Lt Paul Hincks, Officer Commanding 121 Squadron said: "This was a
fantastic public relations opportunity for the Squadron, with the Gun Run
in the main arena during such a high profile community event. The cadets
have all worked extremely hard to perfect what has proved to be a
spectacular Gun Run demonstration. Our civilian committee, staff and
cadets have also done us proud once again this year with all the effort
they have put into promoting the Squadron and its activities.
"We have had an extremely successful day and I have no hesitation in
saying that if the Wing’s Field Day and Nuneaton Carnival dates don’t
clash we will be back at the Gala again next year.”

Nottingham Armed Forces Day – Three Squadrons
Combine to Push for Recruits
Three Nottingham Squadrons joined forces to promote the Air Cadets at
Nottingham’s Armed Forces Weekend Celebrations in the beautiful setting of
the Wollaton Hall Deer Park.
The
cadets and staff from 1359 (Beeston), 1360 (Stapleford & Sandiacre) and
2195 (Long Eaton) Sqns endured rain, wind and hot sunshine over the
weekend but the vagaries of the English weather failed to diminish
enthusiasm in chasing for recruits against the competition of the other
cadets organisations.
The Weekend, organised by Nottingham City Council, had displays from the
RAF Careers and several Territorial Army units and Royal Navy Reserves.
Although not as big as usual due to a clash with the Waddington Air Show,
the Weekend attracted thousands of spectators and considerable interest
was shown in the Air Cadets display by past present and, hopefully, future
Air Cadets.
Flt Lt Allan Munns, the Media & Communication Officer for South & East
Midlands Wing was more than pleased with the response: “It is always a
pleasure to promote the Corps as we have such an excellent product to
sell. With enthusiastic Staff and Cadets at the event has certainly helped
convince those interested that this is the cadet organisation to join. The
cadets we had on site were probably the best advertisement we could have
had for the Corps.”

2028 Recruit at Southam Jubilee Carnival
On Bank Holiday Monday five members of staff and no less than 22 cadets
from 2028 (Southam) Sqn took the opportunity to take part in the annual
Southam Town Carnival.
Using
the Wing marquee and other equipment they put up a recruiting stand. The
day was very special as it was part of the weekend dedicated to the
Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen, so the marquee was decked out
with Union Flag bunting for the day. The weather was dry for the most part
with a few spots of rain around lunch time. The Carnival is organised
every year by the local Branch of the Lions which has been very supportive
of the squadron over a number of years.
The staff and cadets set up and prepared the Recruiting Tent on the
recreation ground, together with many representatives of other local
organisations from Southam. The recreation ground is only a few hundred
meters from the Squadron HQ which flew the Union Flag for the day in
tribute to Her Majesty the Queen. The cadets took it in turns to work on
the recruiting stand and walk around the site with hand outs and other
literature about the ATC.
Many of the cadets had spent the last two parade nights preparing the
photographs and other ‘items’ ready to display at the Carnival, all
intended to show the many activities that Air Cadets get the opportunity
to become involved in. During the afternoon, the crowds became amazing
with the avenue of stands thronged with people out to have a good time.
There was the usual funfair and various activities going on throughout the
day with everyone dressed in red white and blue.
The
day was yet another success in that it presented an opportunity to remind
the people of Southam, young and old, that their local Air Training Corps
Squadron is alive and well and looking for new recruits. In fact once
again, it was great to tell them that 2028 Squadron not only continues to
flourish but is maintaining its numbers and always looking for more
cadets.
The Mayor of the Town, Cllr Mike Gaffney, visited the stand and promised
to do all he could to continue to advertise the Squadron. He took the
opportunity to say that he and the Town owed so much to the air cadets for
the success of his Afghan Concert held earlier in the year and expressed
his admiration for all the cadets do in the town and how much the other
Mayors who attended the concert had admired the way 2028 conducted
themselves that evening.
Flt Lt Daryll Moreton commented: "It was a really good day today with
people entering into the spirit of the Queens Diamond Jubilee. We were so
proud to fly the Union Flag at the squadron and give our own three cheers
to Her Majesty before the Carnival. The radets naturally were also eager
to show off what the Air Cadets can offer young people and taking the
opportunity of inviting the youngsters of the Town to come along and see
us and see more of what the ATC has to offer."

It’s The Place To Be
The
local teenagers are queuing up to join the Lynn Air Cadets. 42F (King’s
Lynn) Sqn has three intakes each year in January, May and September and
recently an induction evening was held at their Loke Road HQ for the May
entrants.
Prospective new recruits and their parents attended and were given
presentations by both adult staff members and current cadets on the vast
range of activities and opportunities that the Air Cadets can offer those
who join.
Cadets visit RAF Stations and also have the chance to go on Annual camps
to RAF stations in this country and abroad. Further adventure and
educational trips abroad are also organised by King’s Lynn Squadron who
this year are travelling to both the First World War Battlefields of
Belgium and the Harz Mountains in Germany.
Following the induction evening all the young people who had attended were
eagerly awaiting on the next parade night to be let in and swell the ranks
of the Lynn Air Cadets.

Beeston Cadets Take to the Airwaves
Two
cadets from 1359 (Beeston) Sqn have recently had the opportunity to talk
about their time in the organisation on Radio Nottingham.
CWOs Adam Hill (19) and Claire Hallam (19) were invited to take part in
the Richard Spurr show during the afternoon of Thursday 10th May as part
of 1359’s current recruitment campaign. They were joined in the studio by
Beeston’s Media and Communications Officer, CI Mike Hill.
The interview offered the chance for Adam and Claire to chat to Richard
about the activities that are on offer and to also talk about their time
as cadets, both have been involved since they were 13. CI Hill spoke about
the aims of the Corps and how it has a positive effect on the young people
who join the organisation.
CWO Hallam said afterwards: “That was a great experience and a

assembly.
With less than ten minutes available the presentations had to be concise.
Sgt (ATC) Vincett introduced the presentation and spoke about the ATC in
general before showing a short information film. Fg Off Liam Waring then
spoke about 209 Sqn and the activities that we have planned for the next
year.
Sgt Vincett who organised the presentations said: “At the end of the

Spreading the Word
As part of its current recruitment drive 209 (West Bridgford) Sqn ran a
Recruitment Stand at Nottingham's Emmanuel School, the event being held
during the schools lunch break.
This
was the first time 209 Sqn used its new Sqn Marquee and also the first
time we were able to use our refurbished Viking Glider cockpit. FS (ATC)
Shane Grice had put in a lot of work shortening the cockpit, re-covering
the seat, repainting and applying new decals to the outside. We also had
an information film projected onto a screen and information boards and
leaflets.
The stand was very busy with some of the school teachers controlling the
flow of students arriving to see what was happening. The glider cockpit
was a big hit with many people sitting in it including the school’s Deputy
Head, Jo Green.
The four staff and two cadets
which included Cdt Eleanor Piggins who attends Emmanuel were kept busy for
the whole hour of lunch break. Then a whistle blew and the bustle and
noise of a school disappeared as the pupils returned to lessons.

Touchwood Support
Last
weekend cadets from 489 (Acocks Green & Olton) Sqn were in Touchwood
Shopping Centre in Solihull looking for new members to join the Air
Cadets.
Showing their support to one of the UKs largest youth organisations was
Lorley Burt MP for Solihull and the Mayor of Solihull, Cllr Irene
Chamberlain, both of whom visited the cadet stand.
This was in addition to the great support from Touchwood Shopping Centre
who allowed the squadron the space. FS (ATC) Andy Coles, Recruitment
Manager said: "Local support is key to our success and having Lorely,
the Mayor and Touchwood show their support just elevates our status in the
community."

Harry
The Hippo Recruits
140 (Matlock) Sqn cadets used the recent Victorian Market as a chance to
gain new recruits for the squadron in the form of 'Harry the Hippo'.
Matlock Cdts Emily Greatorex and Harry Fox let a wide eyed new recruit try
on the squadron's pilot flying helmet, which entertained the crowds almost
as much as the radio controlled Hippo's usual crowd-pleasing patter!
The 140 Squadron cadets attend the Market every year but this is the first
time they have recruited from the animal kingdom!

485 Recruit at Quinton Fun Day
Saturday 9th July saw cadets and staff from 485 (Harborne and Quinton) Sqn
travel to the Four Dwellings School in Quinton to take part in a family
fun day.
485
Sqn have supported this community event for the past few years and when
they were invited to attend again this year, the Sqn immediately accepted.
The Squadron had borrowed the Wing Gazebo and along with radio equipment
supplied by the Sqn, and CI Peter Coates, the cadets were ready to show
all the benefits of joining the ATC to the local public.
On two occasions during the day, members of the Sqn’s drill team put on a
short display to the public and this was appreciated by all who watched
them. In fact during the second display, three enterprising young ladies
decided that they could do drill and simply joined in with the team!
Fg Off Simon Jennings, OIC 485 Sqn commented: “Although it wasn’t a
very busy day in terms of recruiting I think it is still important that we
show support to these local community events. We did speak to a few
teenagers who seemed interested in joining the ATC so hopefully they will
visit us at the Sqn. I would like to thank all the staff and cadets who
attended on the day.”

Parent Pulling Power
As part of 209 (West Bridgford) Sqn's drive to raise it's profile in the
local area it ran a recruitment stand at the Becket School’s Year 8
parents evening.
Sgt
(ATC) Richard Vincett, Recruitment Officer for 209 Sqn said: “Emma
White, The Schools Extended Services Co-ordinator has been very helpful in
identifying suitable events that we can attend. I got the idea of
attending a Parents Evening after speaking to other Cadet Instructors.
They found that getting the parents interested is sometimes more effective
than getting their kids interested. It also avoids the stress of doing
School Assemblies! Apart from speaking to lots of interested pupils I met
one of my work colleagues whose daughter goes to the Becket School and a
former 209 Cadet whose 13 year old sons attend the school. With the help
of Cdt Fajar Rizal who is a pupil at the School and Cdt Lydia Welham, we
were able to get the names of some pupils who were interested in joining
209 Sqn.”

Rushcliffe Borough Council Armed Forces Day
In amongst the stalls for the Royal British Legion and Nottingham VC Fund,
209 (West Bridgford) Sqn ran a fund raising and recruitment stall at the
Rushcliffe Borough Council Armed Forces Day.
Despite
the limited equipment available the cadets made themselves busy promoting
the tombola, selling raffle tickets for the Wing and speaking to interested
youngsters and their parents about the ATC. Many people visited the stall
throughout the day including the new Mayor of Rushcliffe, Cllr Gordon Moore
and his wife Georgia.
Jill Tring, Chair of 209s Civilian Committee who organised the event said: “Thank
you to the public for supporting 209 Squadron. The cadets sold 124 Wing
raffle books. Good luck and I hope one of you is a winner of the top prize
of £500. With this and the Tombola we raised £208 for the squadron. It was
an enjoyable day and I would like to thank Nikki and Ruth at Rushcliffe
Council for inviting us to take part."
The event was shared with ‘Proms in the Park’ and the day ended with a
concert which included the Nottinghamshire Police Pipe Band and the
Nottingham Concert Band.

2028 Recruit at Southam Carnival
On Bank Holiday Monday the 3oth May 2011 five members of Staff and 11
Cadets from 2028 (Southam) Sqn took the opportunity to take part in the
annual Southam Town Carnival.
Using
the Wing marquee and other equipment they put up a Recruiting stand. The
day was wet for the most part with the unfortunate result that a lot of
people stayed at home. The Carnival is organised every year by the local
Branch of the Lions which has been very supportive of the Squadron over a
number of years.
The staff and cadets set up and prepared the recruiting tent on the nearby
recreation ground, together with many representatives of other local
organisations from Southam. The cadets took it in turns to work on the
recruiting stand and walk around the site with hand outs and other
literature about the ATC. Two of the cadets had arrived early to post
notices around the Town about the air cadets. Many of the cadets had spent
the last two parade nights preparing the photographs and other items ready
for the Carnival.
During the afternoon, the weather calmed down a little becoming clearer
and brighter but still with drizzle on and off, allowing everyone to get
into the spirit of the day. There was the usual funfair and various
activities going on throughout the day to keep those who braved the rain
amused.
The day was a thorough success in that it presented another opportunity to
remind the people of Southam, young and old, that their local ATC Squadron
is alive and well and looking for new recruits. In fact once again, it was
great to tell them that 2028 Squadron is not only flourishing, but
maintaining its numbers and always looking for more cadets. A number of
young people expressed a real interest in visiting the Squadron on a
parade night.
The Mayor of the Town, Councilor Mike Gaffney, visited the stand and
promised to do all he could to continue to advertise the squadron. He took
the opportunity to say once again how much he enjoyed the recent 70th
Anniversary Awards Ceremony and expressed his admiration for all the air
cadets do in the Town.
WO Storer-Rogers said after the event: "It was a really good day today
with people braving the heavy rain at times. The cadets were eager to show
off what the air cadets can offer young people and tell them why they
joined. We once again achieved our objective of being seen and taking the
opportunity of inviting the youngsters of the town to come along and see
us and see more of what the ATC has to offer.”
